Brandon man jailed for vehicular homicide in Steen woman's death


LUVERNE – 25-year-old Christopher Weber of Brandon, SD, the man who was driving the pick-up that struck and killed Andrea Boeve Monday, is being held is the Nobles County Jail for vehicular homicide.

Formal charges, which had not yet been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, will come from Rock County.

STEEN – A 33-year-old Steen woman died Monday when the bicycle she was riding collided with a pick-up on Highway 270 in Rock County north of Steen. Andrea Boeve, a nurse practioner, died in the crash. Two children, 4-year-old Claire Boeve and 1-year-old Mallorie Boeve, were riding in a trailer pulled by Andrea’s bike and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Boeve was riding her bike eastbound on Highway 270 pulling the trailer when she collided with the 2003 Chevrolet pick-up of Christopher Weber, age 25, of Brandon, SD. Weber suffered no apparent injuries.

Murray County contemplates ambulance tax district


SLAYTON – It looks as if the majority of Murray County residents are well on their way to being taxed for ambulance service. During a public meeting last week, the Murray County Hospital Board met with members of the Slayton City Council and various township and city representatives to discuss implementing a tax district for the Murray County Ambulance coverage area.

WORTHINGTON – According to Worthington Public Utilities Manager Scott Hain, the static water level out at Well 26 is looking better, but he’s not quite ready to lift the non-essential water ban yet.

The water level is measured each Friday out at Well 26, and a 2 foot gain was recorded this past week. Hain said that is good news, but not as much as hoped. While we’ve crept past the 16-year average level, he said, we’re not yet prepared to lift the ban. With the holiday on Friday, Hain will have his crew check the levels again on Thursday before making any decisions.


Nobles County Commissioners declare State of Emergency; regional rail authority assesses $1.5M in damages


WORTHINGTON – During an emergency meeting Friday, the Nobles County Board of Commissioners declared the county in a state of emergency for conditions resulting from the persistent and continuing high precipitation severe summer storms beginning June 11, which caused a significant amount of public property damage.

According to County Administrator Tom Johnson, the damage to the county is estimated at approximately $600,000, but that number could change as things continue to be assessed.

WORTHINGTON – According to the courts, part of the mall can be demolished. Judge Gordon Moore said Thursday in Nobles County District Court that the K-Mart portion of the Northland Mall appears hazardous and seems to have essentially been abandoned, granting the city the right to demolish the structure.

Worthington City Attorney Mark Shepherd, who represents the city in this matter, said he made attempts to contact someone from Northland Mall Realty LLC in this matter, but to no avail.

WINDOM – A Windom man is facing second-degree attempted murder charges after allegedly kicking a pregnant woman and threatening her with a knife. Nickson Otema, age 25, is also charged with second- and third-degree assault.

The criminal complaint states he was arrested Sunday when the Windom Police responded to a report of a fight in progress in the 600 block of 13th Street at approximately 5:52 p.m.
