Appellate court upholds conviction of Jackson man who fatally stabbed brother

JACKSON – The Minnesota Court of Appeals today upheld the conviction of a Jackson man who fatally stabbed his brother at the Colonial Manor in Lakefield in 2010. Ty’ron Louis Collins, sentenced to 306 months in prison after being declared guilty of second-degree murder, appealed, contending statements he made to law enforcement should have been suppressed, that the prosecutor committed misconduct by asking Collins if other trial witnesses were lying and that the court abused its discretion in sentencing Collins to a term in the middle of the presumptive guideline.

City of Worthington no longer under water ban

Good news for the city of Worthington – according to Worthington Public Utilities Manager Scott Hain, the well level measurement taken today at the Lake Bella well field shows the static level at 21 feet 3 inches, achieving the target set by the Public Utilities Board. Hain said the level had gone up 2 feet 3 inches since last Friday’s measurement.

“Since the ban was imposed, we’ve been taking readings weekly and the Water & Light Board had set a target level,” Hain said. “In the past week, we saw some really significant recharge and achieved our target by seven inches.”

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Iowa DNR officials say water samples taken following a wastewater discharge to Big Spirit Lake on Wednesday indicate that the impact to the water body appears to be minimal. DNR Environmental Specialist Bryon Whiting says the results from several e-coli samples have been examined, with some elevated levels near the storm sewer outlet, but he notes that those levels drop off rapidly about 200 feet away from the storm sewer outfall. Another sample from Orleans Beach near the spillway appears to be close to normal.

Area officers honored as DWI Enforcer All-Stars at Target Field

ST. PAUL — Last year in Minnesota, drunk driving crashes accounted for 104 deaths — 26 percent of the state’s total traffic deaths. More than 28,000 motorists were arrested for DWI. Tonight during the Minnesota Twins pre-game festivities, the DWI Enforcer All-Stars will be recognized for outstanding service in enforcement and prosecution of drunk driving.

I-90 road construction scheduled to begin soon

WORTHINGTON – According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, I-90 traffic from Worthington to Jackson County Road 5 will be restricted to two-way by mid-July as crews resurface the westbound lanes. Work will begin July 1 to build crossovers from westbound to east bound. I-90 motorists should expect reduced speeds and some delays until resurfacing in complete in mid-August.

The project also includes adding 10 miles of cable median guardrail along the same route. Installing the rail will take until mid-September to complete.

Wayne Klumper involved in motorcycle crash

WORTHINGTON – Long-time YMCA program director and current volunteer Wayne Klumper was involved in a motorcycle crash shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Fox Farm Road and Crailsheim Drive, which, according to his Caring Bridge site, caused numerous injuries, including a bruised lung, fractured facial bones and bruising of the brain. A CT scan showed the bruising and bleeding is not spreading, a family member wrote. Klumper is sedated and sleeping, and will be kept that way for several days.

WINDOM – A man who died Tuesday in a head-on collision west of Windom has been identified as Jason Steffes, 39, of Balaton. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Cody Falk, age 24, of St James was driving a 2011 Ford Superduty east on Hwy 62 when he collided with the 2008 Ford Taurus of Steffes in the westbound lane. When authorities arrived, Steffes was found dead at the scene. Falk and a passenger, 20-year-old Nathan Gisch of Mountain Lake, were transported by ambulance to the hospital in Windom, both with non-life threatening injuries.
