Body of sister located who jumped in the falls to save brother is recovered
Published by onSIOUX FALLS, SD – Authorities today located the bodies of one of two people missing in Sioux Falls after jumping into the water at Falls Park to save a 6-year-old child.
According to Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthow, 16-year-old Madison Leigh Wallace of Vermillion jumped in to save her young brother, Garrett Martin Wallace, who had gotten lost in the foam created by the falls. Bystander Lyle Frances Eagletail, 28, of Sioux Falls, also jumped in to assist. The child made it back to shore, but the other two disappeared from sight and were not located until this afternoon.
Search crews have recovered the body of 16-year-old Madison Wallace.
At 2 pm, search crews started working in a confined area and set up a tarp. Shortly after, crews loaded a body onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.
Besides the foam from fast moving water and the cold, recovery efforts were hampered by the thick ice. A special crane was brought in to try to break through two feet of ice, so divers could get into the river.
