WORTHINGTON – The Worthington City Council met in special session Wednesday morning to discuss the sustainability of the Worthington Rediscovered program. Since the new council took office at the beginning at the year, they have met for work sessions or special meetings approximately twice a month to familiarize themselves with various programs, discussing the best way to utilize or fund them or how to make sure the public is aware of the opportunities the programs provide.

WORTHINGTON - The District 518 school board Tuesday approved a new three-year contract for Superintendent John Landgaard beginning with the 2015-16 school year with a base salary of $152,000. That will rise in increments to $157,000 in 2017-18. Landgaard will also receive one extra vacation day, bringing the total to 36.

WORTHINGTON - Oliver Wolyniec of Worthington High School was named the 2015 statewide Class AA male recipient of the Minnesota State High School League Triple “A” award at the 27th annual awards banquet in Minneapolis on Saturday.

Smith Avenue house damaged in overnight fire

WORTHINGTON – A house that suffered significant damage during an overnight fire is most likely repairable, according to Worthington Fire Chief Rick von Holt. The Worthington Fire Department was paged at 12:50 a.m. this morning to 1304 Smith Avenue for a report of a house fire.

According to von Holt, smoke was coming out of the roof vents when firefighters arrived at the scene. All of the residents had gotten out of the house at that time. WORTHINGTON – The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for this afternoon for southwest Minnesota and east central South Dakota. High fire danger is expected this afternoon, however, very high fire danger is expected along and south of the Interstate 90 corridor due to strong winds and low humidity. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

While snow melt has left the ground somewhat saturated and moist, abundant prairie grass and brush is very dry and conducive to burning.
