Slayton man killed in motorcycle crash after eluding authorities

WINDOM – A Slayton man was killed in a motorcycle crash Saturday evening after eluding authorities, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Chad Danneman, age 33, had fled from Cottonwood and Murray County deputies after being reported armed with a knife. He was driving a 1998 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Each pursuit was terminated by authorities. At approximately 6:30 p.m. Saturday, a state trooper was travelling east on Cottonwood County 10 when he saw Danneman stopped ahead. Body of sister located who jumped in the falls to save brother is recovered

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Authorities today located the bodies of one of two people missing in Sioux Falls after jumping into the water at Falls Park to save a 6-year-old child.

According to Sioux Falls Police Chief Doug Barthow, 16-year-old Madison Leigh Wallace of Vermillion jumped in to save her young brother, Garrett Martin Wallace, who had gotten lost in the foam created by the falls. Bystander Lyle Frances Eagletail, 28, of Sioux Falls, also jumped in to assist. The child made it back to shore, but the other two disappeared from sight and were not located until this afternoon.

School board contemplates property purchase

WORTHINGTON – The District 518 School Board went into closed session this morning during a 7 a.m. meeting to discuss making an offer on a piece of property for the purpose of building a new school.

Superintendent John Landgaard presented the board with several projection estimates that vary dependent on whether or not a site would be in an area that qualified for a percentage of federal funding. BCA releases 2012 permit to carry report

WORTHINGTON - The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension today (Friday) released the 2012 Permit to Carry Report, an annual report summarizing data collected from Minnesota law enforcement agencies regarding applications made for handgun carry permits as well as data about permit holders.

Minnesota sheriffs reported to the BCA that 33,816 permits were applied for and that they issued 31,657 permits in 2012, up significantly from recent years - more than 10,000 more than in 2011. Statewide, 9 permits were suspended, 6 voided and 285 denied in 2012.

Boy killed, three in critical condition after I-90 crash

WORTHINGTON – A 6-year-old boy died Saturday evening in a car crash on I-90 west of Worthington, and three others are in critical condition, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The report states a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by James Fisher, age 30 of Luverne was westbound when it went out of control and went through the median into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck broadside by a 2012 Nissan Versa. WORTHINGTON – The Twins Caravan stopped in Worthington this afternoon, bringing Ron Gardenhire, Terry Steinbach, Brian Dozier and commentator Dick Bremer to the Worthington Area YMCA for a chance to chat with fans, sign autographs and talk about the upcoming Twinsfest on January 25, 26 and 27.

The event gave area residents a chance to ask questions about the upcoming season, the feeling of stepping into the batter’s box during a major league game and the reasons behind several changes the team has made.

Making a Splash

More than 40 brave men and women jumped into the icy waters of Lake Okabena Saturday afternoon for Winterfest's Deep Freeze Dip to raise money for the Jami Cummings Learn to Swim program. The temperature hovered in the low teens all afternoon, and a chilly breeze had more than one spectator shaking their heads in amazement as the jumpers took turns leaping into the frigid water. Fundraising came up just a bit short of the $25,000 goal, but a final tally has not been reached as money is still rolling in. You can still donate and help push to the $25,000 mark!...

Fire at TAC causes evacuation

WORTHINGTON – A fire reported at 1:40 p.m. this afternoon had the Worthington Fire Department out.

All clients were evacuated immediately from the building.at the The Achievement Center for two hours fighting a blaze in the duct work of the woodshop. The fire department used their aerial truck to get water down inside the venting of the building.
