WORTHINGTON – Bituminous pavement restoration was completed on Apel Avenue, Burlington Avenue and Johnson Lane as part of the sanitary sewer manhole or spot repairs, according to the City of Worthington Engineering Department. Pavement restoration was completed on Lake Avenue spot repairs near Tower Street, but concrete cure time along with bituminous overlay remains for five spot repairs on Lake Avenu from Winifred Street east to May Street.

Appel takes place as new Police Chief

WORTHINGTON – Troy Appel was officially welcomed Thursday as the new Director of Public Safety for the City of Worthington during a pinning ceremony at the Prairie Justice Center. Appel, who has been a member of the Worthington Police Department since 1993, has been the Commander of the Buffalo Ridge Drug Task Force since its inception in 2005.

Worthington City Administrator Craig Clark said the city was very pleased to be able to promote one of their own.

WORTHINGTON – The Southwest Minnesota Chapter of the American Red Cross is merging with the Prairie Winds Chapter and the South Central Chapter to form a new chapter called the American Red Cross serving Southwest Minnesota.

Because of the merge, the chapter building in Worthington will be closing as of the end of December, according to Southwest Minnesota and Prairie Winds Chapters Executive Director Jennifer Hyk.

Hyk said will she be the executive director for the new merged chapter, which will be headquartered in Mankato.

WORTHINGTON – Six council candidates and three mayoral candidates for the city of Worthington squared off in a packed cafeteria Monday night during a forum at the Worthington Area High School, vying for seats that will be decided during the Nov. 4 general election.

Gov. Dayton hopes to announce summit details during Worthington pheasant opener

WORTHINGTON – Gov. Mark Dayton said he is hoping to make an announcement about the date and location of his proposed pheasant summit during the Governors Pheasant Hunting Opener this weekend in Worthington.

“I’m excited about this trip to Worthington. I originated these hunts three years ago – this will be the fourth - and they are really growing in popularity,” Dayton said. “I hear the pheasant population there is up.”

WORTHINGTON – Worthington City Administrator Craig Clark has been offered the position of city administrator for the city of Austin. On Saturday, the Austin City Council voted 5-1, with one member voting no and another abstaining, to offer the vacant position to Clark.

The council members spoke highly of Clark and the skills he would bring to the table, especially in the areas of economic development and his working relationship with state agencies. Next, Clark will begin contract negotiations with Austin’s city attorney and resources director.

WORTHINGTON – Worthington Police Sgt. Nate Grimmius has been named the new commander of the Buffalo Ridge Drug Task Force. According to Nobles County Sheriff Kent Wilkening, the task force board met Wednesday morning and appointed Grimmius to the position.

Technically, Troy Appel is still the commander, but he will move into the position of the Worthington Director of Public Safety/Police Chief next week. Grimmius, who has been with the Worthington Police Department for 10 years and the drug task force for seven, will then move into the position as commander.
