Three riding mowers stolen in Windom, police asking for assistance

WINDOM – The Windom Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating three riding lawnmowers stolen from the Runnings store in Windom last night or early this morning. The stolen mowers include a 50 inch Cub Cadet in near new condition, an MTD 42 inch in near new condition and a Poulan 42 inch approximately two years old. A trailer may have been used to take the mowers or multiple trips with a pick-up were made. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Windom Police Department at 507-831-6134.


Cop on Top totals, drawing winners announced

WORTHINGTON – This week’s Cop on Top event raised more than $6,600 for Special Olympics Minnesota, according to Worthington Police Officer Jacki Bomgaars.

The 24-hour fundraiser began Tuesday at 6 p.m. with Bomgaars raised to the top of the Hy-Vee Food Store by the Worthington Fire Department aerial truck. For the next 24 hours, Bomgaars and other officer worked in 4 hour shifts, laughingly heckling shoppers into donating for a great cause.

Burgers were served, t-shirts sold and donations grew.

Cleveland kidnapper found competent for trial

CLEVELAND (AP) — A man charged with holding three women captive in his Cleveland home for about a decade and raping them has been found competent to stand trial.

A Cuyahoga County judge said during a hearing Wednesday that an examination found that 52-year-old Ariel Castro is mentally able to understand the charges and assist attorneys in his defense.

Castro has pleaded not guilty to a 329 count indictment that includes multiple kidnapping and rape charges. He's being held on an $8 million bond.

WORTHINGTON – A Wilmont man suffered non-life threatening injuries Monday when his 1997 Chevy GMT 400 collided with a freight truck on I-90. Daniel Cowen, 53, of Wilmont was eastbound on the interstate when the two vehicles got involved in a sideswipe crash at approximately 1:40 p.m. just past the Worthington weigh station. Christopher Wyldes, 31, of Menno, SD, who was driving the freight truck, received no apparent injuries. Damage to the freight truck was minor, but the Chevy GMT was totaled. Appellate court upholds conviction of Jackson man who fatally stabbed brother

JACKSON – The Minnesota Court of Appeals today upheld the conviction of a Jackson man who fatally stabbed his brother at the Colonial Manor in Lakefield in 2010. Ty’ron Louis Collins, sentenced to 306 months in prison after being declared guilty of second-degree murder, appealed, contending statements he made to law enforcement should have been suppressed, that the prosecutor committed misconduct by asking Collins if other trial witnesses were lying and that the court abused its discretion in sentencing Collins to a term in the middle of the presumptive guideline.

City of Worthington no longer under water ban

Good news for the city of Worthington – according to Worthington Public Utilities Manager Scott Hain, the well level measurement taken today at the Lake Bella well field shows the static level at 21 feet 3 inches, achieving the target set by the Public Utilities Board. Hain said the level had gone up 2 feet 3 inches since last Friday’s measurement.

“Since the ban was imposed, we’ve been taking readings weekly and the Water & Light Board had set a target level,” Hain said. “In the past week, we saw some really significant recharge and achieved our target by seven inches.”

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa - Iowa DNR officials say water samples taken following a wastewater discharge to Big Spirit Lake on Wednesday indicate that the impact to the water body appears to be minimal. DNR Environmental Specialist Bryon Whiting says the results from several e-coli samples have been examined, with some elevated levels near the storm sewer outlet, but he notes that those levels drop off rapidly about 200 feet away from the storm sewer outfall. Another sample from Orleans Beach near the spillway appears to be close to normal.
