Farm Expo Features Special Guest Bill Northey

The Farm Laboratory of Iowa Lakes Community College will host its annual Farm Field Day and Expo this Thursday, July 9, in conjunction with a Tractor Ride sponsored by the Iowa Lakes Foundation. And, the Expo features a special speaker this year.

Bill Northey, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, will be the keynote speaker at 6 p.m. Thursday. He will discuss the outlook for Iowa agriculture as well as take questions. Northey is a graduate of Iowa State and a fourth generation farmer from Spirit Lake.

12 Princess Kay Finalists Selected

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The selection of 12 young women from dairy farm backgrounds on Sunday, May 17, in St. Cloud has paved the way for crowning Minnesota’s 62nd Princess Kay of the Milky Way, the dairy industry’s official goodwill ambassador. The newest Princess Kay will be named just before the opening of the Minnesota State Fair in August, and each of the 12 finalists for the title will be sculpted in butter throughout the fair.

SAINT PAUL – During the final session of the 86th Minnesota State FFA Convention, six FFA members from across Minnesota were elected to serve as the 2015-2016 Minnesota FFA Officers. These six members will spend the next year representing Minnesota throughout the state and nation, advocating for the agriculture industry.

Sen. Franken urges Vilsack to Take Action Against HPAI

WASHINGTON, D.C. [04/13/15]—U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) is pressing the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary to make sure that measures remain in place to support the hundreds of family farms in Minnesota whose production has been hurt or threatened by avian flu.

In a letter to Sec. Tom Vilsack, Sen. Franken urged the USDA to protect turkey growers in Minnesota from losing their livelihood by maintaining an all-hands-on-deck response to fighting the current outbreak. H5N2 Confirmed in Wisconsin Commercial Chicken Farm

WASHINGTON -- The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial layer flock in Jefferson County, Wisconsin. The flock of 200,000 chickens is located within the Mississippi flyway where this strain of avian influenza has previously been identified. CDC considers the risk to people from these HPAI H5 infections in wild birds, backyard flocks and commercial poultry, to be low. No human infections with the virus have been detected at this time....

Nobles County 4-H announces the Win A Pig Competition for 4-H members in the county who are actively involved in or are planning to be involved in the Minnesota 4-H Swine Project. The winning entrant will receive a market pig (gilt or barrow) which will be at least two months of age at the time of selection. ST. PAUL, Minn. – In upcoming weeks, many area farmers will begin spring anhydrous ammonia (ammonia) applications. Serious injuries in Minnesota over the last several years were caused by the mishandling of ammonia. Each year, FFA chapters around the country celebrate National FFA Week. The week-long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington's birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington's birthday.
