MDA Seeks Farmers for Minnesota Grown Directory

Minnesota farmers and farmers markets that sell products directly to consumers are invited to purchase a listing in the new Minnesota Grown Directory. The cost for a listing in the 2013 directory is $40 and interested farmers and markets must sign up by February 15. Over 940 farms and farmers markets were included in last year’s edition of the directory.

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) will print and distribute approximately 190,000 copies of the Directory statewide through tourist centers, libraries, chambers of commerce, farms and retailers. By purchasing a listing...

For those whose eyes follow the USDA statistical reports, this is a reminder that all USDA statistical reports released in 2013 will be revealed at 11:00 a.m. (Central Time)

These major reports with the noon release time are:World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE), Acreage, Crop Production, Grain Stocks, Prospective Plantings, and Small Grains Summary. USDA previously released these crop reports at 8:30 a.m. EDT. or 7:30 a.m. Central Time

The time for livestock reports currently released at 3:00 p.m. will not change.

MN Research & Promotion Councils Seek Candidates

Four Minnesota agriculture research and promotion councils are seeking candidates for their board elections. Positions are open on the board of directors for the barley, beef, corn and soybean research and promotion councils. Candidates will be selected through mail ballot elections conducted by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) in March.

The candidate registration deadline is February 7, 2013. These farmer/leaders will serve three-year terms directing the investment of their research and promotion council...

Working into the wee hours of the new year, the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a fiscal cliff bill that will extend farm policy through September. With this extension, legislation has essentially kicked the farm bill can down the road in an attempt to avoid the so-called Milk or "dairy" cliff.

The giant New Year’s tax package rushed through Congress Tuesday includes a nine-month farm bill extension that forestalls any immediate spike in milk prices but also represents a bitter blow for farmers who had hoped for long-sought changes in the dairy support program.

Minnesota's Wolf Hunting Update

Minnesota’s late season wolf hunting and trapping season has proven to be successful for hunters and trappers with 205 wolves harvested out of target quota of 253. The only zone that remains open until January 31 is the northwestern zone--138 wolves have been harvested out of a target quota of 187 in that region.

In the early season hunt, 147 wolves were harvested out of a target quota of 200, which brings the total number of harvested wolves to 352.

University of Minnesota Crops Trial Bulletin Available

The University of MN Field Crop Trials Bulletin is now available in print and electronic forms. The new publication, dated January 2013, provides results from U of MN trials conducted in 2012 across the state. The varieties tested are from both public and private breeding programs and include U of MN developed forage, grain, and oilseed crop varieties.

Plant varieties tested include alfalfa, barley, birdsfoot trefoil, canola, corn for grain, corn for silage, oat, soybeans, spring wheat, and winter wheat. Trials were conducted across the state at Research and Outreach Centers...

Pork Producers Serve Military Families

Pork producers from across the country served hundreds of U.S. military families by distributing pork meals on Dec. 2 during the 2012 Snowball Express, a charity for the children of America's fallen military heroes.

"We appreciate the sacrifice these parents and children have made, and we want to give something back," said Derrick Sleezer, a pork producer from Cherokee, Iowa, and member of the National Pork Board.

For U.S. Carryover Numbers:
• Corn: Unchanged, sitting at 647 million bu (Nov projection at 647 million)
• Beans: 130 million bu, down from Nov projection of 140 million
