Jim Hagedorn declares candidacy for First Congressional District for 2016

WORTHINGTON – Blue Earth resident Jim Hagedorn has once again announced his candidacy for Congress in Minnesota’s 1st District, seeking a rematch in 2016 against Democrat Tim Walz, who is currently serving his fifth term.

“I’m enthusiastically entering the race and will be working full-time to replace Tim Walz and bring a conservative, commonsense voice to Congress,” Hagedorn said. “My Minnesota farm roots and first-hand knowledge of how Washington D.C. functions and dysfunctions will help me faithfully represent the views and interests of southern Minnesotans.”

JASPER – Two women from Jasper were killed Monday morning when a fire broke out at a hog barn fire four miles east of the city, according to a news release issued by Rock County Sheriff Evan Verbrugge.

The fire was reported to dispatch at approximately 9:23 a.m. Jasper Fire and Rescue responded to the call, along with other departments called in for mutual aid. The sheriff’s office was told two individuals were unaccounted for and believed to be inside the barn. According to the report, some employees were pressure washing inside the barn when the fire broke out.

WORTHINGTON – There is still space for producers who want to sell items at the Worthington Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

The downtown Farmers Market begins June 23 and continues each Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. during the summer in the parking lot at 10th Street and Second Avenue. The Saturday market takes place in the Ace Hardware parking lot along Oxford Street and begins July 11.


Friday evening crash injures four

WORTHINGTON – One person was seriously injured and three other received non-life threatening injuries when two vehicles crashed south of Worthington Friday evening shortly before 7:30 p.m.

WORTHINGTON - Law enforcement program students from the Minnesota West Worthington campus will be at local boat landings beginning this weekend to educate boaters about how to avoid the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). The students will be present at selected Nobles County boat landings on weekends and holidays from the Minnesota fishing opener through Labor Day.

ST. PAUL — Sen. Bill Weber of Luverne was appointed to the conference committee on House File (H.F.) 846, the Omnibus Environment and Natural Resources Appropriations Bill, earlier this week. This committee will resolve the discrepancies between the two versions of the bill that passed the House and Senate.


Charges filed in armed robbery case

WORTHINGTON – A 16-year-old Worthington boy is facing several charges in Nobles County District Court for allegedly committing an armed robbery at a small grocery store on Oxford Street in Worthington Tuesday. Simon Berihu Gebrehiwot is charged with first-degree aggravated robbery, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a pistol after being convicted for a crime of violence.

WORTHINGTON – The Worthington Police Department arrested one adult male and one juvenile male Tuesday in connection with a report of an armed robbery at La Morenita, 1517 Oxford Street. According to a release issued by Worthington Police Chief Troy Appel, a 911 call was received at 11:35 a.m. Assisted by the Nobles County Sheriff’s Office, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Buffalo Ridge Drug Task Force, the two suspects were arrested at a residence on North Burlington Avenue.
