Minnesota FFA Convention Results

The 85th Annual Minnesota State FFA Convention wrapped up this week, with many area FFA members and alumni taking home high honors.

Big congratulations to Deb Martin, Worthington ag teacher and FFA advisor, as one of the 19 individuals to receive the Honorary State FFA Degree!

This honor is presented to teachers, individuals and companies who have demonstrated continued success and support of the FFA and/or ag education, and made a significant impact and contribution to the success of students and the organization.

SIBLEY -- Devan Vander Veen, a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School, was elected Iowa FFA vice president representing the Northwest Region during the 86th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference Tuesday night in Ames.

Vander Veen was one of 24 candidates vying for a position on the state officer team and continues a four-year string of state officers hailing from the Sibley-Ocheyedan FFA Chapter. To earn the state officer position, Vander Veen participated in a two-day interview process last week that included seven rounds of personal questions, speeches and essay writing.


Project Morning Star presented to drug court team

WORTHINGTON – The Cornerstone Drug Court Team was presented today with information about the proposed Project Morning Star Residential Recovery program, a transitional housing program in which residents can work on their recovery from addiction in a safe, stable and sober environment before re-entering the community on their own.

WORTHINGTON - This year marks the 63rd annual observance of the National Day of Prayer, established by Congress in 1952. The theme for the 2014 National Day of Prayer is “One Voice, United in Prayer,” emphasizing the need for individuals to join together in corporate prayer for their communities, their nation and their leaders.

WORTHINGTON – The abatement plan filed by Northland Mall owner Mike Kohen is insufficient, according to Worthington Director of Community and Economic Development Brad Chapulis. He explained to the city council Monday night that he and his staff had examined the plan of action Kohen had submitted last month and found there was no specific schedule or scope of work, and no executed contracts.

WORTHINGTON — Music, art and poetry will all be celebrated at 4 p.m. today in the Fine Arts Theatre at Minnesota West Community and Technical College, Worthington Campus, as part of the Fine Arts Collaborative Exhibition program.

WORTHINGTON – Water main reconstruction work began this week on Nobles Street from Minnesota 60 to Orchard Road, according to the City of Worthington Engineering Department. Motorists are asked to watch for traffic issues and workers in the construction zones.

2014 Pork Industry Scholarship Award Winners

Congratulations to the 2014 Pork Industry Scholarship winners! A total of 18 recipients were selected, hailing from 12 states and 10 universities. Several of these winners hail from the tri-state listening area (highlighted in green), with the majority of the recipients from Midwest states.

OCHEYEDAN, Iowa — After an autopsy, the cause of death of an Ocheyedan, Iowa man was determined to be blunt force head injuries from an accidental fall in the victim’s home. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office investigated the death of Steven Bruce Noble, age 46, after responding to a 911 call Monday afternoon. The autopsy was performed Tuesday by Dr. Jonathan Thompson at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny.


Final Decision on RFS Looming

On Earth Day, April 22nd, the The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) retroactively lowered the volume of cellulosic biofuel that refiners must blend into traditional fuels, aligning the 2013 mandated volume to the actual amount of fuels produced.

We are still awaiting the final decision on the 2014 proposed Renewable Fuel Standard from the EPA and in the meantime, in conjunction with Earth Day, the Fuels America coalition has launched a campaign to counter the U.S. oil industry's campaign against ethanol.
